Biography

Matthias Deller was born in 1998 in Berlin, Germany, where he still resides to this day. So far, his artistic career has been rather short. Even though he really had loved drawing/painting as a child, he started to neglect it once he hit puberty. A not negligible reason for this was art class in school. While, at that time, it was only during these lessons that he continued his hobby, he simply did not like being told what to create and consequently did not enjoy it. However, after having painted again with a really great friend of his, he kind of re-discovered this old hobby. Following his newyear’s resolutions, he even exceeded his goal of creating one painting per month in 2020. In 2021, his aim is to keep creating and to connect most of his new paintings by establishing some sort of common thread. So far, his main medium has been acrylic colours on canvases or thickened paper but trying out oil colours is his next step. A common theme in his paintings is the human body, that is, organs, the skeleton, and particularly skulls, representing our own mortality, something we often seem to forget or better, most of the time we would like to. Furthermore, he is fascinated by the question of existence, which he does not aim to answer but rather to evoke.
